What is coaching & how does it work?

“ You cannot teach a person something he does not already know; you can only bring what he does know to his awareness” Galileo

With their support your Coach will ensure that you do the following:

  • Discuss your plans and goals
  • Act as an impartial sounding board
  • Formulate a thorough plan of action
  • Help you make small steps towards the bigger goal
  • Act as a catalyst for your actions
  • Motivate you to continue when you hit a stumbling block
  • Suggest alternatives
  • Question your perceptions and beliefs
  • Share in your successes along the way
  • Develop your courage to think bigger and better
  • Share their knowledge and insight to benefit you

Your relationship with your coach should be:

  • Professional
  • Confidential
  • Impartial
  • A contractual agreement that states what your coach will offer you, what you can expect and a signed commitment from you.

The coaching relationship is a professional one, not like having a chat with a friend or family member who may laugh at your ideas or doom them to failure. You need to work with your coach who has vision and passion to help you succeed, who will be impartial, help you think about any potential problems before encouraging you to formulate a realistic plan that will work for you.

Most coaching is conducted over the phone on a 1-1 basis, but face to face sessions can be arranged if practical. Coaching can also be conducted via email or as part of a group session, check the range of services that your coach offers.

Regular sessions with your coach could be once a week, once every two weeks or once a month depending on the coaching programme you sign up for; to discuss:

your progress, any issues you may have encountered, how you feel about the changes that you are making, the action that you are taking, what you are learning about yourself and to set further goals.

Coaching is about challenging your self, learning to take responsibility and making choices. Your coach is there to support and guide you but not tell you what to do and how to do it.
